About Seascape Photography - Introduction

Maritime climates are usually dynamic, and the rhythm of the tides and the passing clouds make it relatively straightforward to create images bursting with energy and flow.

Seascapes make an excellent learning ground where diverse techniques can be practiced and mastered – and for those of us fortunate enough to live within the scent of salt water, every day we go back to familiar locations they can look completely different.

This series of ebooks has been written to teach you everything you need to know to get out there and start taking marvellous seascapes – from the most basic and hassle-free techniques through to complex and demanding contemporary disciplines at the cutting edge of our art and craft.

This e-book is an Introduction to the Harvesting Light Seascape Photography Series. It contains a detailed overview of the Harvesting Light Creative Cycle as used by Alister Benn and paves the way for the rest of the e-books in the series – Vision & Composition, Single Frame Techniques and Multiple Frame Techniques.

Further chapters covering Equipment and Safety by the Sea are also included here.

About Seascape Photography - Vision & Composition

Seascape Photography is not a linear process; we can be thinking about a final image and how it may look long before we take our camera out of the bag. Assessments of Exposure and Depth of Field are disciplines we should be considering right at the beginning in our Visualisation phase.

Quite often, I am already considering processing options while I am still taking in the scene before me.

You see, seascape photography is not a linear process, but a mesh of disciplines :

  • Vision & Composition
  • Focus & Exposure
  • Processing
  • These disciplines make up the Creative Cycle we examined in Introduction to Seascape Photography.

The purpose of this book is to create a clear and progressive path that photographers can follow, in order to build increasing artistic confidence based on strong foundations of image design and visual craft.

We buy that luxury of confidence with some hard work in becoming comfortable with our equipment; visual dynamics and technical capture techniques.

Great images are the product of a number of elements, all of which have to come together to create a magically illusive mixture of opportunity meeting skill. We have to possess great skill in all of our three disciplines, as mastery of one does not cancel out a deficit in the other.

Focus, Exposure and Processing are all skills that determine feel, mood, emotion, impact and visual continuity.

Composition however, is your choice of subject, and its visual relationships with other elements in the frame – it should be clear, concise and well-crafted in order to lead the viewer on a journey of discovery – drawing them in to your image and demanding attention.

About Seascape Photography - Single Frame Techniques

This is the third book in the Seascape Photography Series and covers the Harvesting Light Phase of the Creative Cycle and then looks at processing single frame images for expressive and artistic reasons. It builds on the solid foundations laid down by Introduction and Vision & Composition.

Photography is a marriage of both art and craft, and for our expressive artistic side to have space to flow, we must have a certain level of technical mastery. This book outlines the importance of being able to properly expose and focus digital RAW files to create what I call good exposures.

A good exposure in a DSLR is not one that looks like the final image, it is one that contains the most data that can be used to process an excellent image on the computer later..

Just as the photography masters of years gone by were experts in the darkroom, so must we become experts in the lightroom – the computer processing zone. Harvesting great light in our RAW files is key to providing us with the maximum opportunity to create meaningful and expressive images – our messages, our communication and our art.

For Landscape Photographers, places where the oceans meet the land are an absolute wealth of opportunity. The combination of weather, tides, seasons and huge diversity of habitat and details is almost unsurpassed by any other environment.
